Efficacy of Levamisole on HBsAg Positive Hepatitis

Abstract
It has been demonstrated that levamisole improved impaired host-defence mechanism in man, activating T-lymphocyte and macrophage functions.
Cellular immunity may be disturbed in acute viral hepatitis, and HBsAg positive chronic liver disease can develope from acute-type B hepatitis in patientswith depressed immune function.
In an attempt to evaluate the effect of levamisole in the patients with HBsAg positive acute viral and chronic active hepatitis, the changes of the HBsAg antigenemia and serum GPT and GOT levels were measured after levamisole treatment and compared with prednisolone treated group.
1. In the patients with acute viral hepatitis all of the 7 cases treated with levamisole 150mg and 3 of 4 cases given levamisole 450mg showed a remarkable reduction of HBsAg antigenemia and serum. GPT and GOT levels.
2. In the chronic active hepatitis with prednisolone therapy the HBsAg antigen emia were decreased in 4 of 8 cases and the serum GPT and GOT levels in 3 of 8 cases.
3. Among the chronic active hepatitis treated with levamisole, levamisole 150mg group- revealed a significant improvements of HBsAg antigenemia, serum GPT and GOT levels in 75% of patients.
However, the levamisole 450mg group failed in reducing HBsAg antigenemia in all of the 5 cases (100%), while serum GPT and GOT levels were diminished in 6 and 4 of 7 cases respectively.
4. Changes in rate of E-rosette forming T-cell were not significant after levamisole treatment.
